West-Philly Campus Learning Support Office

The Learning Supports office serves and helps learners whose basic academic skills are below the minimum levels required to enter a credit program at PHILLY-TECH. Each technical education program has a described entry level of reading, language, and math competencies.

The purpose of learning support is to provide learning experiences in reading, language, and math that will aid the learner in mastering the skills and knowledge needed for admission into a selected program of study.

After testing is completed, students shall be advised to complete the appropriate courses. Students who attended the college prior to the start of the term and who are returning to the college will be required to retake the placement exam.
Students transferring into PHILLY-TECH who have not completed a transferable English or math course will also be required to take the placement exam. Tutoring assistance with the exams is available in the learning support office to help students.

Test support prevents academic problems from interfering with educational goals open to all registered learners, and the learning support office offers free academic tutoring services in different courses.

Tutors are available for specific subjects. The center is also equipped with computerized tutorials which are designed to help students improve skills in math, reading, and writing. These tutorials encourage each student to raise their skills by practicing in these areas and becoming actively involved in developing critical thinking skills for problem solving.
In addition, the Student Learning Support Office provides remediation and language assistance to credit earning students identified as English second language (ELS). Tutors are available to aid ESL and International students by creating individualized instructional plans that include language specific challenges that support in building grammar, reading, vocabulary, and listening skills.
