Computer Hardware and Software Technologies:

There are currently two available courses under the Computer Hardware and Software Technologies, the Philly-Tech IT SPARK, and PC Specialist. Both are available for Spring and Summer season. In both courses, students learn the fundamentals of Information Technologies. IT SPARK focuses on introductory learning for middle and high school students who aspire to explore careers in Information Technology and related fields while the PC Specialist focuses on IT courses for all computer users both adults and young learners.

PHILLY-TECH IT SPARK

Philly-Tech IT Spark program mission is to inspire middle school boys and girls to spark or explore the possibilities of technology to inform and empower their future IT career interest and choices. Our vision is to create a world where boys and girls develop or enhance a lifelong passion and confidence in their use of technology throughout their careers and those who would like to pursue IT careers can learn about the various specializations available and decide which ones they would want to get into.

PHILLY-TECH IT SPARK students will undertake a hands-on exploration of IT topics including:

  • What is Information Technology (IT)? What can you do as an IT professional?;
  • IT concepts and terminology;
  • What’s Inside a Computer;
  • How Computers Talk – Introduction to network communications;
  • Applications and software – How to install, uninstall, maintain, & troubleshoot software;
  • SQL: Explore & Command databases – database fundamentals;
  • Making a Website Using WordPress;
  • Making a website using HTML/CSS;
  • Designing Mobile Apps;
  • Build Your Own Voice App using VOICEFLOW;
  • Creating your own games using GameMaker;
  • NoCode app building using AppGeyser;
  • Data Privacy: How to protect your personal information;
  • Internet Safety: How to stay safe online.

PHILLY-TECH PC Specialist

Philly-TECH PC Specialist focuses on IT courses for computer users. It is a Digital Literacy program where students learn computer systems like hardware, software, networking, internet, and cybersecurity. This course is useful for people who are already working or searching for employment and want to advance their IT skills. Entreprenuers or those who own small and medium businesses and home users are also encourage to take this course to gain or improve their computer technology usage skills. Some of the topics covered in this course include:

  • Basic Computer Hardware and Software;
  • Computer Operating Systems;
  • Basic Computer networking;
  • Internet and web browsers;
  • Office productivity applications – Email, Wordprocessing, Spreadsheets and databases, Presentation (Microsoft Office, and Google Workspace applications);
  • Data storage;
  • Graphic design and multimedia;
  • Online safety and digital citizenship;
  • Computer troubleshooting;
  • Social media skills;
  • Information Processing;
  • Keyboarding/typing.
