American Sign Language English Interpreting

Upon completing this program, students will be equipped with the skills and knowledge required to work as ASL-English interpreters in a variety of settings, including educational, medical, legal, and community contexts. They will have a deep understanding of ASL linguistics, Deaf culture, and the ethical principles that guide the interpreting profession.

ASLDC 100: Introduction to ASL and Deaf Culture

  • Introduction to ASL Linguistics
  • Deaf Culture and Community
  • Fingerspelling and Numbers in ASL
  • Basic Conversational ASL

TRIMESTER 2:

ASL 100: ASL Grammar and Vocabulary

  • ASL Syntax and Grammar
  • Expanding ASL Vocabulary
  • Non-Manual Signals and Expressions
  • Ethical Considerations in Interpreting

TRIMESTER 3:

ISKTEC 100: Interpreting Skills and Techniques

  • Interpreting Fundamentals
  • Consecutive and Simultaneous Interpreting
  • ASL to English Interpreting
  • English to ASL Interpreting

TRIMESTER 4:

 PRASP 100: Practicum and Specializations

  • Internship in ASL Interpreting
  • Specialization in Educational Interpreting
  • Specialization in Medical Interpreting
  • Legal Interpreting and Community Settings

Students have to contact the school administration if they want to take extra credits or transfer credits to pursue the Diploma Certificate or Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) Degree in their field of interest.  Students will select required number courses in each of the areas listed to meet general education requirements graduation for the A.A.S.  Some of these courses can be transferred directly from and to the university system and may be substituted for recommended courses on the outline.  Students should speak with an advisor before doing so these selective courses are required for all students.
