Automotive

The automotive program at PHILLY-TECH provides training in the manufacturing and production of most components for automobiles such as: engines and bodies but excludes tires, batteries, and fuel. PHILLY-TECH offers learning programs for Electrical and Hybrid; Auto Mechanic; Body Work; Heavy Equipment mechanic; Heavy Equipment Operator.

Electrical and Hybrid Cars

At PHILLY-TECH, students will learn how electrical motors function in electric vehicles and how to maintain them. In contrast, students will learn about Hybrid electric vehicles which are powered by an internal combustion engine and an electric motor and uses energy stored in batteries. Student will learn how the battery is charged through regenerative braking and by the internal combustion engine. Students will also learn how a hybrid automobile uses a mix of fuel and electric power to combine propulsion in order to provide increased fuel performance. The advantages of a hybrid motor include comparatively less fuel usage and reduced Carbon Dioxide emission and more environmental than traditional gasoline or diesel-engine vehicle.

Auto Mechanic/Technician

The terms “mechanic” and “technician” are often used interchangeably but the Bureau of Labor Statistics places them in one category.
At PHILLY-TECH, student will learn how to repair basic car parts like brakes, steering wheels and engines. Student will learn how to inspect and fix a vehicle’s electrical system and perform automotive care tasks such as checking and changing fluid levels and rotating tires. In mechanic application at PHILLY-TECH students will experience hands on opportunities to fix or repair parts. In addition, students will learn about the implementation of the new technologies for diagnosis and trouble shooting systems to fix problems.

Auto Body Technician/Auto Body

Auto body repairs concern only the restoration, refinish, and replace vehicle bodies and frames. PHILLY-TECH equips students to inspect car frames for structural damage and assess reparability on damaged parts. At PHILLY-TECH auto body technician trainees can repair most damage due to minor vehicle collisions such as replacing a cracked windshield. Students will also be able to repair damage caused by major collisions such as replacing an entire door panel.

In contrast, the mechanic will repair engine components and related parts that wear out during normal driving.

Heavy Equipment Operator

Heavy equipment mechanics, also known as heavy-duty equipment mechanics, are industry mechanics who specialize in working with heavy machinery used in construction, farming, and railway transport and mining. At PHILLY-TECH, students will learn how to operate and maintain the heavy equipment engines by inspecting, servicing, and repairing any damage to engines or other mechanical parts.

As diesel Technicians/Mechanic trainees, students will inspect, repair, maintain or overhaul diesel powered vehicles such as buses and trucks. At PHILLY-TECH, students will run the diagnostic tests on vehicles, test drive vehicles to gauge performance and maintain detailed records of the vehicles they have serviced.
